Dr. William trenton Scranton(1856-1922), one of the medical missionaries of the
Methodist Church (USA), arrived in Korea in May 1885 and established the First
Methodist Hospital(ã¿Ü»êÂ) in September 1885. The Hospital had a waiting room an
office, a pharmacy, an operation room admission rooms, and a kitchen. Medical care was
provided mainly to the poor. The average fee per medical treatment was 2 cents. The
number of patients reached 12,209 in 4 years. Most of them suffered from malaria,
dermatitis, syphilis, small pox, cholera stomatitis, Bright's disease, malnutrition, typhus
fever, and recurrent fever. Scranton and Henry G. Appenzeller provided English and
medical education to young Korean assistants. Dr. M. Howard came in October 1887 and
took charge of the Woman's Hospital(ÜÅÏ­åüν) until 1889. Dr. Scranton pointed out the
irrationality of oriental medicine, the status of Korean doctors, the use of the amulet as
a means of healing, and the attitudes of Koreans to western medicine. He advices
Korean to maintain hygiene and pray to heaven to overcome the cholera epidermic.
Scranton evaluated medical activities as the forefront work of foreign mission in Korea.
He regarded the medical missionary as being in charge of doctor, teacher, and gospel
preacher at the same time. He depart Korea in 1890 and died at Kobe, Japan in 1922.
