Abstract
序言
스크랜톤의 의료보고서를 통하여 개화기의 의료 활동을 살펴보았다.
1) 진료대상으로는 한국의 여러 곳, 모든 계층의 환자들이 찾아 왔으나 의료시혜를 베풀어
야 할 대상은 주로 어려운 환경에 놓인 이들이었다. 무료 시혜를 베푼 환자가 많아 평균 진
료비는 2센트 정도였다.
2) 4년 동안 총 12.209명의 환자들을 돌보았다. 외과수술은 거의 시행하고 있지 않았고 대수
술은 한 건도 실시하지 않았다. 질병의 종류로는 학질, 피부관리를 함부로 하거나 영양부족
으로 인한 피부병 환자, 연주창, 매독 환자도 적지 않았다. 천연두는 풍토병이였고, 진성 콜
레라로 수천 명의 사람들이 희생되었다. 특히 아구창(구강괴저병), 브라이트병, 사망한 자,
영양 결핍 환자, 전염병 환자, 작은 발진열, 재발하는 열병에 대한 기록이 있으며, 콜레라에
대한 대책으로 환경 개선과 기도를 제시했고, 치료에 대한 한국인의 태도에 대하여 자세한
기록을 남기고 있다. 진료의 면으로 한약의 불합리성과 한국 의사의 지위, 한국식 병명, 부
적에 대한 스크랜톤의 단편적인 의견을 기술하고 있다
3) 의료사업이 시작된 것은 스크랜톤의 거처에서 1885년 6월부터였다. 施病院의 시작은 독
립된 건물을 빌려 개조한 후 1886년 6월 15일에 첫 환자를 진료하였다. 내부구조는 환자대
기실, 대합실 겸 사무실, 약제실, 수술실, 병실, 부엌과 연구실이 있었다. 필요시에 헤론(Dr.
Heron)이 종종 시병원을 지원해 주었으나, 버림받은 환자와 전염병 환자, 전국적인 진료 계
획을 위하여 새로운 의사가 필요하다고 강조하였다. 1889년 8월 27일에 맥질(Dr WB
McGill)이 도착하였고, 1897년 10월 31일에 도착했던 여의사 하워드(Dr M. Howard)는 1889
년 9월 떠날 때까지 여성 진료를 맡았다.
4) 의료활동의 선교적 평가 한국선교의 역사는 의료선교와 함께 시작되었으며 의료선교는
의사, 선생, 복음전도자의 역할을 한 것으로 크게 강조하였다. 기독교 금교령이 1班遲(반지)
년 4월 28일에, 孀兒騷動이 1888년 6월에 일어났으나 의료선교는 방해받지 않았다.
5) 의학교육 스크랜톤과 아펜젤러는 濟衆院에서 연결을 맺고 영어공부를 마친 후 1888년 가
을에 시작하였다고 볼 수 있다.
Dr. William trenton Scranton(1856-1922), one of the medical missionaries of the
Methodist Church (USA), arrived in Korea in May 1885 and established the First
Methodist Hospital(施病院) in September 1885. The Hospital had a waiting room an
office, a pharmacy, an operation room admission rooms, and a kitchen. Medical care was
provided mainly to the poor. The average fee per medical treatment was 2 cents. The
number of patients reached 12,209 in 4 years. Most of them suffered from malaria,
dermatitis, syphilis, small pox, cholera stomatitis, Bright's disease, malnutrition, typhus
fever, and recurrent fever. Scranton and Henry G. Appenzeller provided English and
medical education to young Korean assistants. Dr. M. Howard came in October 1887 and
took charge of the Woman's Hospital(普救女館) until 1889. Dr. Scranton pointed out the
irrationality of oriental medicine, the status of Korean doctors, the use of the amulet as
a means of healing, and the attitudes of Koreans to western medicine. He advices
Korean to maintain hygiene and pray to heaven to overcome the cholera epidermic.
Scranton evaluated medical activities as the forefront work of foreign mission in Korea.
He regarded the medical missionary as being in charge of doctor, teacher, and gospel
preacher at the same time. He depart Korea in 1890 and died at Kobe, Japan in 1922.
